I recently had the opportunity to work with a mom of 2 boys who wrote to me saying that she had spent so much time thinking about her boys playroom because there is no order in their space and that the toys were everywhere.
She took advantage of my Holiday Special- TWO 90 minute sessions for $100. She works full time, so we met during her lunch break on a weekday while the boys were at school. We spoke on the phone ahead of time and developed a plan, and prior to my visit, she asked her son about his hopes for the room. On the day of our first session, we spent about 15 minutes talking, then we got to work. We worked together and had two boxes- a "giveaway" donation box and a box of things for her younger nephew. She worked through this room with a mission- she was determined to eliminate 60% of the stuff. As we were working, she found toys that she had forgotten about, and we found long-lost missing pieces to games and other toys. This picture was taken about 15 minutes into our work time.
Letting go of stuff is very liberating- it frees up physical space for sure, but it also frees up your mind to another way of thinking- we don't need "stuff" to be happy. We need each other, we need family time together. Children need time and space to explore and create and discover. When there is so much "stuff" it makes that process difficult because there are too many choices.
About 60 minutes after I arrived, we had my car loaded with toys to donate to a local charity. Now her boys have more space, other children will enjoy some amazing toys, and she gave her family an invaluable gift- the gift of order and presence.
I will go back again and help her move some furniture around and add some seating so that she and her husband will feel comfortable in that room as well. The boys love legos so we will create a "Lego Museum" so that they can display their creations. We will add some simple artwork on the walls and help create a warm, inviting, organized space.
